Article from http://www.guildwars2hub.com. Thought this gave a good perspective for people who haven't tried WvW yet or perhaps are still new to it, as to what they should be doing or things they should know.
With the Season starting soon it was only natural we had some sort of discussion about it and specifically we hunted down some Commanders who have been tangling with this fight for a long time now: Commander Jadon [NOPE], Kyle the Savage [ESP], Xandra [RoT]/[CERN] and Kamikaze [DIVA]. We asked them to provide some tips for new players looking to help their server become the best. Hopefully this will not only get you a headstart into the game, for you newer WvWers, but also get into the mindset of things.
"So. Let's put ourselves in the shows of a brand new player to the WvW scene. How should I start? What should be my focus right now?"
This question got some different answers than I expected. Commander Jadon tells new players to focus on what you can do. Upleveled or max level, it doesn't matter. Playing for one hour or twenty, you do not let your server down as along as you are giving 110%. Kyle the Savage responds differently, however, with your first objective is to get to level 80. While you may be upscaled you still won't have the same stats as others who are. Xandra and Kamikaze both voice the same thoughts that new players should follow people and observe. Learn the basics of WvW and learn from your deaths.
"After this I asked who should I be listening to? For my server there are at least three commanders on map at any given time, so where should I go?!"
Commander Jadon responded that it can indeed be very confusing. Typically though, you always always want to float towards the commanders on the map that are actually communicating via chat, as it is usually a good sign they are accepting help. Kyle The Savage says another good resource for some servers is to find which VOIP your server is using. This allows new players to find instructions a bit easier, but also to find more information and reasoning behind commander actions.
"What should I be doing with this so-called "Supply"?"
Commander Jadon emphasizes that supply is absolutely important to WvW. He wants every player to find out what it is, what it does, how to get it and how to use it. Kyle the Savage does us the pleasure of explaining those exact things to us:
Supply is an intricate part of WvW. Supply is created at the supply camps which are flipped quite regularly. As players we are able to attain the supply from the supply camps and use it to build offensive siege, defensive siege, or repair a gate or wall (whatever the commander wants at the time). Dolyaks carry the supply from the camps to towers and keeps owned by your server. This transfers supply from the camps to your other structures and allows those towers and keeps to be upgraded to increase it's defenses.
Kamikaze elaborated on the importance of building when a commander asks:
Don't try to hold onto your supplies but be smart about it; if a commander asks people to build the rams on the gate, then you should focus on building them as fast as you can before someone damages the build site. For example, you have 4 people with 10 supply which is what you’ll need to build 1 Flame Ram. If an enemy manages to hit the build site once, you won't be able to finish the Flame Ram until someone passes by with supply or someone goes to resupply at a camp.
Commander Jadon went on to say that after that he'd want everyone know the importance of siege usage. Things like "This is a ram. Place it close to the gate (not too close), then build it and press 1 to do max damage".
"So we've gotten into some fights by now, or have a massive collection of Badges of Honor from avhievement chests, what should I be doing with them?"
The Commanders were all unanimous in this regard and explain that if you aren't geared in exotics that should be your first stop at the borderlands spawn point. If you have all the gear you need you could get your Gift of Battle for your legendary, or spend the Badges on siege equipment.
Kyle the Savage went on to say that starting players would do well to spend these Badges on Soldier's or Knight's gear. However he did say that if you got everything you need already you should hold onto them as ArenaNet has stated that they are implementing new items you can buy with badges in the future.
"Alright. I'm geared up. I'm running around. I'm focused. What should I be communicating to the map as I go along?"
Commander Jadon says that telling the server you're dead or need a res is quite useless. Telling everyone that approximately 35 people rolled over you and are moving north eat to our tower is 100% useful. Kyle the Savage laid out that the proper way to feed such information is "(number)(server)(location)(direction)(objective, if known)" and his example is "30+ FA at Briar tower headed toward Vale camp".
"Finally, what other things would you like new players to know?"
Commander Jadon and Kamikaze laid out a few notes for players to keep in heart:
Remember to not get too down about wiping once or twice. A challenge is not something to look negatively at but rather embraced with determination.
Use your dodges wisely.
Make sure you do not run full Berserker gear. You will put out a lot of damage but your survivability will suffer. Not only this, it will also make you an easier target for enemies that have greater toughness than you.
Think for yourself. There will always be arguments about builds and gear when it comes to World vs. World and I suggest you try to find out what’s best for you by trying out several setups (though I’d still recommend avoiding a complete Berserker set)
